Abstract

A large drinking bird, suitable for demonstrations to large audiences, only works at very low humidity and moves very slowly. A large ‘sunbird’, 1 m high, was therefore designed and built: the temperature gradient between body and head is obtained by heating the black-painted body with a lamp while the head stays dry and in the shade, so it works at any humidity. The materials and construction (test tubes, stoppers, central tube, two-way stopcock and vacuum pump), the adjustment of the fulcrum and the choice of internal liquid are described in detail: diethyl ether instead of methylene chloride, because it needs a smaller temperature difference to rise 1 m in the tube. With a lamp 30 cm away, the oscillation period is 2.5 to 3 minutes. The apparatus helps to motivate topics such as absorption of thermal radiation, the inverse-square law of intensity, liquid–vapour equilibrium (Clausius–Clapeyron equation) and rotational dynamics.
